Investigators identified the rural mailman who was shot and killed Saturday morning in Banks County as Asa (Junior) Wood of Commerce, 59. According to the Banks County Sheriff’s Office, Wood was working on his morning drive in the 200 block of Hebron Road when he was fatally shot.
A 911 caller alerted authorities to the shooting at around 9:38 a.m. on August 7. When the deputies arrived, Wood was already dead.
During their investigation, officers developed leads on a person of interest and MPs obtained a description of a vehicle.
“While on patrol in the area of Highway 51 North and Bennett Road, the vehicle of interest was encountered by MPs,” said Lt. Nicole Bailes of the BCSO. “The deputies attempted to carry out a traffic check on the vehicle, and the driver of the vehicle fled from the deputies.”

A Banks County Sheriff’s deputy performed a PIT maneuver during the chase, rendering the suspect’s vehicle inoperable.
“Immediately the driver got out of the armed vehicle and started shooting at the deputies. The deputies retaliated, hitting the offender, ”explains Bailes.
The suspect, whose name is withheld pending a GBI investigation, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. No deputy was injured.
The Banks County Sheriff’s Office has asked the GBI to investigate the shooting involving an officer, which is standard procedure. According to Bailes, the deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.
Authorities have not released any information about a potential motive for Wood’s murder.
Sheriff’s investigators are working with U.S. postal inspectors, the GBI and the Banks County Coroner’s Office on the case.
