The authorities are looking for a suspect who intentionally lit a fire in front of the National Archives, the building that houses beloved historical documents such as the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, officials said Friday.

The incident occurred around 8 pm. On Thursday night, a "criminal arsonist placed a can of gasoline on the left side of the building on Pennsylvania Avenue and turned it on," the Archives said in a statement. "Security guards discovered the fire and tried unsuccessfully to turn it off, but a fire department reacted and was able to extinguish the flames."

There were no injuries, but the outside wall of the building was damaged, officials said.

The security of the National Archives attempted to extinguish the fire, but it was too hot. D.C. Fire and EMS reacted and extinguished the fire around 8 pm April 25, 2019.National Archives

The images of the nearby surveillance captured the arsonist, an individual dressed in black pants and a dark jacket over a light-colored hooded shirt with the hood pulled up, which stands directed towards the building, carried out the act and fled quickly, according to the archives.

Several agencies, including the Office of the Inspector General of the National Archives Administration, investigated this incident.
