Ford is eliminating approximately 7,000 office jobs – about 10 percent of its employees – as part of a previously announced global restructuring.

About 800 American workers will lose their jobs by August. Some workers are laid off while others are reassigned, says Ford.

According to the management team, the company will reduce its workforce by nearly 20%, which will allow Ford to save about $ 600 million a year.

In a letter to employees, Ford President Jim Hackett said the restructuring was reducing bureaucracy and making Ford "simpler", meaning most teams do not have more than 9 levels of management, instead from 14.

He acknowledged that saying goodbye to his colleagues is "difficult and emotional".

"We have moved away from previous practices in some areas where team members who were separated had to leave immediately with their belongings, leaving people with the choice to stay for a few days to wrap up and say goodbye." he writes.
