The skier was one of two to trigger the avalanche in the backcountry in an area known as Square Top outside the resort limits near the Park City Mountain Canyons Village resort, a the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Press release.
The second skier was able to “dig to the victim and tried to save lives” but was forced to leave due to dangerous conditions, the statement said.
“The extreme avalanche danger prevented rescuers from entering the area before dark,” the sheriff’s office said.
Summit County Search and Rescue is working with a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter to locate the missing skier, whose identity has not been released.
As snowstorms pile up on top of each other throughout the winter months, the consistency of the snow can change and become unstable and dangerous. Backcountry travelers are encouraged to analyze snow layers and test their stability before skiing or snowmobiling.
The Sheriff’s Office has warned people to use “extreme caution” when entering the backcountry, check avalanche conditions at Avalanche Center in Utah, and use the appropriate equipment for skiing.
