Saturday’s outdoor game – which ended early Sunday – between the Colorado Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights in Lake Tahoe was unlike anything the sport has ever seen before. This is because there was an almost nine hour delay due to the sun creating dangerous icy conditions earlier in the day.
The bright sun on a clear day simply caused too much trouble throughout the first period. Several players and even a referee lost their footing on the melting ice. At the end of the first period, the officials tried to work with the ice and covered parts of it with tarps to keep the sun out. The league ended up making the decision to postpone the game to resume at midnight ET / 9 p.m. PT.
As for the action that unfolded on the ice when it was deemed safe to play, Avalanche center Nathan McKinnon proved why he is one of the NHL’s most electrifying stars. MacKinnon had one goal and two assists in a 3-2 win over the Golden Knights. It was the team’s second victory over Vegas last week.
McKinnon easily provided the most exciting play of the day as he went from start to finish and dropped a goal past Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury midway through the second period, which resulted in a lead of 2-1 at the Avalanche. The score came just minutes after Golden Knights defenseman Alec Martinez tied the game 1-1 with a rebound in net for Colorado.
With less than seven minutes to go into the third period, Devon Toews snatched a shot in front of Fleury from the face-off to make it a 3-1 game. However, Golden Knights forward Alex Tuch reduced it to a 3-2 game after a nice spin past Avalanche goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer to make it interesting, but it was ultimately too little too late.
In the first period, the Avalanche opened the scoring with a goal from defenseman Samuel Girard thanks to a nice assist from MacKinnon just 2:58 left.
In an effort to prevent a similar icy situation from occurring when the Flyers face the Bruins on Sunday, the league has pushed back the start time of that game from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
