I do not know about you, but I let out a slightly stunned exhale for Avengers: End of the game when Thor decapitated Thanos and the title card "Five Years Later" appeared. There had been a lot of theories about what could happen in the movie, but I really did not expect that they would last five years.
The decision of the filmmakers was daring, but why five years? What is it about five years that made it perfect? Talk with wired, co-director Anthony Russo answered this question:
"We wanted to choose an hour long enough to force everyone to move forward. We wanted everyone to go through a life cycle where they had to engage in an existence where it was their new reality. Five years seemed like the right time for that.

So, there was no scientific or specific way they came to this conclusion. From his sound, they just went with a amount of time that felt right to them, and in all honesty, it looks like they made the right choice. Five years is long enough for people to adapt and suffer through the events of the previous film, but not so long ago that it was like it was useless for everyone to come back.
