Earlier this week, we finally had our first look at the highly anticipated Avengers Crystal Dynamics video game, and the answer was … mixed. The main characters in the game, which seemed vaguely inspired by their counterparts in the movie, but far enough away to look like duplicates of the real story, were mocked.

THR spoke with the director Shaun Escayg He explained that although they worked closely with Marvel on the game, they had always wanted their game to be his own thing and not an adaptation of the MCU:

"We knew we wanted to create an original Avengers game and go back to comic book sources," said Crystal Dynamics creative director Shaun Escayg. The Hollywood Reporter.

Escayg says that at no point in the game development process did they consider using the actors' likeness behind the MCU versions of the heroes. "We clearly wanted to show that it was our turn on the Avengers," says Escayg. "Even the way we chose these characters was based on our story and our story."

The problem is that they seem to have received a directive from Marvel – that they look like our ridiculously popular movies – but that they also did not get the likeness rights for the actors. In the end, the design of the characters, especially their costumes and faces, is not a sufficient departure.

Aside from the appearance of the characters, the game will feature at least one interesting multiplayer component in which you can switch from one character to the next. Escayg explains:

"The cooperative element helps a lot. It's almost like playing a different game when you meet each character, "he continues. "It's something that Marvel really asked for. They said that if you are going to attack Iron Man, you must feel like an Iron Man game when you are in its place. "
