An award-winning dog has disappeared from the world's busiest airport.

Gale, an American-born Staffordshire Terrier, was on board a plane Saturday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta when she escaped, officials said. airport.

The 22-month-old canine was with her owners, returning to Amsterdam, where her owners live, after attending an event in Louisville, Kentucky, when security found her kennel empty.

Checkers checked in by Kale Royal Dutch Airlines in Gale and another dog and went to safety. Shortly after the handlers boarded the plane on Saturday afternoon, the security services told them that Gale had disappeared. Managers immediately called his owners.

Floris Van Essen, its owner, said that it was the "worst thing" that happened to him.

"I do not really care what happened, I just want my dog ​​to come back," Van Essen told NBC News. "I know everyone at the airport is doing their best, but it's very difficult."

Andrew Gobeil, a spokesman for Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, said the entire airport was on alert since the disappearance of Gale.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines said that she was working actively with the Atlanta Airport in search of the dog and expressed her "most sincere regrets" to the owners.

Van Essen said that they were in touch with the airport and airline officials, receiving regular updates, but that this incident had traumatized him.

"We will never fly with our dogs again," he said. "It was the worst thing that happened to me."
