This story is part of I’m so obsessed (subscribe here), our podcast featuring interviews with actors, artists, celebrities and creative types about their work, careers and current obsessions.

Every once in a while an actor or artist has a point where it all falls into place. For actor Dallas Liu, that moment is happening right now. He plays the role of Shuji in the Hulu PEN15 series, which is nominated for three Emmy Award including exceptional comedy series. He can be seen from September 3 in the new Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings. And Netflix has just announced that it will star in the next live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

At CNET’s I’m So Obsessed Podcast, Liu explains what it was like to film Shang-Chi and more specifically what it was like to work with Awkwafina. Liu said she gave him advice that really struck a chord.

“Awkwafina is definitely an inspiration to me. She gave me a lot of great advice and affirmation words, telling me that I have a place in this industry and that I could definitely become a big star if I kept working on it, “Liu said. “She basically told me to be patient and my time was approaching.”

You can listen to my entire conversation with Liu in the podcast player above or on Apple Podcasts. During our interview, Liu talks about his experience as a martial artist, working on PEN15 and being on the set of Shang-Chi.

You can watch PEN15 Season 2 on Hulu and you can see Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings in theaters starting this weekend.
