LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky police said a parent of a 2-month-old boy had unwittingly left him in a drunk car, where the child is dead.
Lexington police said Valen Hakizimana was declared dead Thursday night. A statement from the police indicates that the baby was in the vehicle for several hours. An autopsy revealed that the cause of the baby's death was a heat-related illness called hyperthermia.
Hyperthermia is a condition caused by exposure to extreme heat, resulting in a rapid rise in body temperature.
The family member has not been identified and no charges have been filed. Police say the investigation is continuing.
KidsAndCars.org, a rights group, says the boy is the second child to die in a hot car in Kentucky this year.
