One of the biggest reveals from last weekend’s episode of The Mandalorian was Baby Yoda’s real name. His name is Grogu and executive producer Jon favreau has known it from season one, but that was another executive producer Dave filoni who figured out how to finally reveal it with the debut of Rosario Dawson like Ahsoka Tano.
Speaking of which, do you remember the time when everyone was freaking out about Jon Favreau taking a picture of Star wars Creator George lucas to hold Baby Yoda at the start of the year? As it turns out, Rosario Dawson was in full wardrobe and makeup like Ahsoka Tano that day, and she was there for that viral moment.
Vanity Fair had an in-depth chat with Dave Filoni and Rosario Dawson about last weekend’s episode of The Mandalorian, titled “The Jedi”. It was a huge moment for longtime fans of the Clone Wars animated series because it brought Dave Filoni’s creation to life in live-action Star wars universe. The character’s debut also saw fans finally discover The Child’s name. Filoni explained:
“The name has been around for some time. Jon told me at the start of the first season what it would be, which got me thinking about how people might learn the name. It gave me the idea that Ahsoka, who is very compassionate, would be able to connect with the child, and that without words they could probably communicate through memories and experiences. Through this connection, she learns the name, then tells it to Mando and the audience.
Although he is 50 years old, Grogu does not speak. He makes adorable sounds, but he hasn’t communicated with words. Thanks to the Force, Ahsoka Tano is able to psychically connect with him and learn what he has been through. I’m not sure its name is as important as the name of its species, but it’s good that they haven’t found a way to reveal the information until now. But Filoni admits he must have forced himself to stop just before winking at fans by asking someone to call him Baby Yoda:
“I thought one of the most compelling things about Ahsoka’s presentation is that she’s one of the few people we might meet in a story and she was like, ‘Alright. I have met someone like him. I’ve only ever seen one other being like this. I had to stop myself from doing something ridiculous like making him say, “Is that a baby Yoda?” It’s almost requests to say.
With “The Jedi,” fans got another cross between the animated side and the live action of Star wars, following the arrival of Katee Sackfhoff in the role of Bo-Katan. But this episode which actually provided an even more surreal Star wars moment, especially for Rosario Dawson. One of the days she was shooting scenes for Ahsoka Tano was the same day George Lucas visited the set of The Mandalorian. Dawson revealed she was there for the moment that took the internet by storm. She told Vanity Fair:
“Actually, I have to be there the day there is this photo. Someone took a picture of George Lucas holding Baby Yoda. I always call him Baby Yoda – Grogu! I was there that day. I was fully dressed, I was right next to this photo, all done like Ahsoka. And I remember he broke the internet when this picture came out. It was just an amazing, amazing time, and we were all beside ourselves. It was really very geeky.
So one day on the set of The Mandalorian, the creator of Star wars held the latest pop culture sensation in a live iteration of one of the most beloved characters from The clone wars stood out of focus in the very first live action Star wars series. It’s kinda crazy that we got here, but we are definitely not going to complain.
