Babylon 5 reboot is in the works on the CW

It’s time for one of the the most beloved sci-fi classics of the 90s to come back – and the man behind it the first time around is back for more.

Varietyy reported that Warner Bros. ordered a restart of Babylon 5, product and written by Straczynski as part of an agreement between Warner Bros. Straczynski TV and Studio JMS. The series is not a continuation of the series, but a “top-to-bottom” reboot of the cult classic 1993 series, which has gone through five seasons and seven TV movies until 1998. Set in a future where humanity has gone to the stars and found a plethora of extraterrestrial civilizations in an attempt to live in harmony, Babylon 5 followed Earthforce Officer John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) as he took command of the titular space station Babylon 5, a hub for diplomatic meetings, trade negotiations and ultimately a platform among the renewed conflicts between the world’s civilizations and even humanity’s own descriptionenter into totalitarianism.

The series was beloved for its dark sci-fi storylines and its approach to a massive, interwoven narrative throughout its seasons and films, and spinoffs like the TNT series. Crusade–tell a long story, rather than plots of the week, with iconic alien characters like Delenn by Mira Furlan and the little villain of Andreas Katsulas became the spiritual figure G’Kar. Although the series ended in 1998, it has inspired a whole universe of related novels, and its influence is felt everywhere, from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to Straczynski’s own work collaborating with the Wachowskis on Sens8.
