With US representative Jim Sensenbrenner announcing his retirement on Wednesday, we decided to take stock of how the Wisconsin Republican has behaved with the PolitiFact Truth-O-Meter over the years.

Sensenbrenner was the second-longest member of the House of Representatives, representing the 5th district of Wisconsin, Republican since 1978.

Since the creation of PolitiFact in 2007, we have tested Sensenbrenner five times. These verifications of the facts gave a note of true, one half true, one half false and two false. Here is a sample:

March 4, 2014 – Jim Sensenbrenner says that as part of Obama's proposed budget, the military would be smaller than before Pearl Harbor. (False)

July 7, 2013 – Representative Jim Sensenbrenner said it took 25 years to get citizenship legally and only 13 years for illegal immigrants under a Senate bill. (Half true)

May 28, 2013 – A girl was fined US $ 500 for rescuing a woodpecker, said Representative Jim Sensenbrenner. (Mostly false)

April 3, 2013 – Representative F. James Sensenbrenner said 75% of the closed air tours were in Republican districts. (False)

December 19, 2011 – Jim Sensenbrenner, representative of GOP Wisconsin, said he had committed most of the charges in US history. (True)
