Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki released an update regarding the Foveon X3 1: 1: 1 sensor and camera which was delayed in February of last year after the sensor he was working with failed could go into series production due to a critical defect.
Yamaki explains that the project had to be restarted completely after Sigma terminated its contract with the sensor maker it had collaborated with to mass-produce the sensor. As a result, the Foveon camera was delayed “indefinitely” a year ago. In an effort to update fans on the status of the project, Yamaki has provided a small update on this situation.
The company felt it needed to restart the process completely, as it determined that the original sensor specifications would make it too difficult to develop a product that meets its standards. He explains that the company is still in the research and development phase of this process and that Sigma has not yet proceeded with the actual development of a camera.
Yamaki seems determined to express that Sigma chose to restart this process because of their desire to produce an exceptional product, and anything they could have produced at this point would not have served that purpose. Still, for those who are waiting for a Sigma Foveon camera, this device is quite possibly still a long way off.

Dear SIGMA customers,
First of all, thank you very much for your continued support and interest in our products.
In February 2020, we announced our decision to restart our plans for a full-frame Foveon X3 sensor camera, starting with the development of new sensor technology. We haven’t been able to share any information regarding this project in time since, and I would like to use this short post to provide an update on the situation.
As previously announced, we halted development on the project after the sensor we were working with failed to go into mass production due to a critical flaw. As a result, we also terminated our contract with the sensor manufacturer with which we had collaborated. In addition, we determined that the original sensor specifications would make it difficult to develop a product that will meet our high standards and those of our customers, and so we decided to go back to the drawing board.
At present, we are fully engaged in the research and development of the project, under the direction of our head office, and are reviewing the specifications to ensure that we will be able to meet the expectations placed on this project. While we have not yet developed a camera body, we will continue to do everything possible to create a camera that we have full confidence in.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the strong and constant support you have shown us.
