Google today started rolling out “Backup by Google One” as an update to the existing Android backup service, which now means end users only need to be notified of a cloud sync. .
Android backups currently cover app data, SMS messages, call history, contacts, and device preferences, including Wi-Fi networks and passwords, wallpapers, display settings (brightness and standby), language and input settings and date / time.
Backup by Google One is touted as more granular and extensive, as well as unified. Namely, it can also backup photos, videos and MMS messages with management and control now directly in Android settings, in addition to existing Google One app or website.
With this change, MMS is now part of the default Android backup experience. Last year, the company started allowing anyone to backup MMS, but that required installing and using the Google One app.
This unified approach aims to remove any distinction in backups. Today, people are mostly familiar with Google One (which is the closest match to Google Photos media backup) and may not be familiar with what is done automatically in the background. This usually kicks in until they get a new device and set it up. Users will now have less to manage and will be actively aware of what is stored.
In the gallery below, the first two screenshots are from the System Settings app, while the third is in the Google One app. In the latter, you see the additional option to activate / deactivate “Multimedia messages” and “Photos and videos”. All these preferences will be available soon in the new Google One Backup page in Android settings.
Current Android backup
Despite the “Google One” brand, this backup system will be available for all Google accounts. It comes as Google last July made the storage management tool in the Google One app accessible to everyone, regardless of subscription status. Users are still limited to 15GB of free storage, all of which requires a paid upgrade.
Going forward, Google plans to continue improving the unified backup experience for Android.
Backup by Google One begins rolling out to devices running Android 8.0 today and will be fully available “within the next few weeks.” The company will provide more details when it launches on a large scale.
