Baker Mayfield knows his team’s loss on Sunday is not just on the shoulders of the officials who announced the game.
That, however, didn’t stop the Cleveland Browns quarterback from calling them after their 47-42 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium – though he knows the league will almost certainly hit him with a fine for doing so.
“At the end of the game… you might as well send the beautiful letter now. We asked the referee on the sidelines how the hell he missed that call, ”said Mayfield, via Athletic’s Zac Jackson. “They were pushing [receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones] out of bounds then [receiver Rashard Higgins] is caught, so there are two PIs in a room. They didn’t call him, but we shouldn’t even have been in that position.
On the one hand, it’s easy to see why Mayfield is upset.
Their last attempt to win the game ended in a last-minute effort, and there was plenty of contact in the end zone that could have warranted a flag.
Mayfield and others are also upset with a pass interference call on the fourth down, which resulted in the Chargers winning their winning touchdown. Cleveland cornerback AJ Green was called for interference on a ball directed at Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams.
This call, Myles Garrett said, was “terrible”.
But, as Mayfield acknowledged, it’s not fair to blame just these games – rightly or wrongly – for the loss.
“We left too many points on the pitch in the first half”, Mayfield noted. “It’s very frustrating that we haven’t done our job well enough to deprive ourselves of the ball game. We left it in someone else’s hands. We have to be better at it. “
