CLEVELAND, Ohio – Almost 30,000 people have fallen silent. Their quarterback had the conch.
Then Baker Mayfield spoke. The Dawg Pound sounded like DMX, woof woof. And day 10 of the Browns’ training camp began at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Orange and Brown practice of 2021 held a specific tone.
Enthusiastic.
“I don’t know of any other place in the country that would have so many fans here for training,” Mayfield said in the midfielder.
Still, the quarterback kept his business, hard on himself while uplifting others.
“We worked,” he said. “We’re setting a new standard and these guys are ready to play for you guys.
In Berea, Myles Garrett takes center stage. At FirstEnergy Stadium, this is Baker’s home.
In the last two practices I’ve watched Mayfield off the field. His manners after a throw. What he does during rehearsals for the second and third teams. All the important quarterback stuff minus a soccer ball.
Let’s unpack some observations I made on Saturday and Sunday Here is what we learned from Days 9 and 10 of Browns training camp.
Mayfield works on Austin Hooper
Whenever one of my college football teammates had a bad day to catch, I knew what to say.
Ellis: “Brother. Stop overthinking the trap. What’s the hardest part of catching passes? Openness, right? You were open to any practice. We’ve been catching soccer balls since pre-K, haven’t we? So you have this. Excellent opening job today.
Sometimes football is that easy. Hooper will be fine. However, David Njoku seems more explosive against the cover of men. Kansas City and Baltimore play a lot in men’s defense. In these games, I would expect Kevin Stefanski to show 85. Against Pittsburgh and the Bengals, let Hooper find some weak spots.
The two tight ends complement each other well. Mayfield understands this and consistently shows support on the pitch. Early in practice, when Hooper caught a nice high ball, Mayfield ran and celebrated with a jump spike.
When practice ended with Njoku’s touchdown from Case Keenum, Mayfield ran to celebrate.
GM Andrew Berry forms two tight 1-caliber rosters while Kevin Stefanski prepares a third. Harrison Bryant has had a multi-strike practice including a 35-yard deep touchdown.
Mayfield has Hooper’s back. I am convinced that there is not much concern about his Sunday falls. It will bounce back. In large part because the Browns are masters of communication. This bodes well for tight ends, especially in the red zone.
Talk about
Think about all the planning, intrigue, debate, and hours it takes to call a piece unique. Each snap has a purpose. Stefanski radios into Mayfield’s helmet with a goal. Immediately, smart teams discuss their mistakes. The losers blame it and let the film decide later.
In Saturday practice (day 9), Mayfield failed to log on several early passes. Whether on air or during team drills, the Browns’ offense was not clear. Later, a calm Mayfield walked over to Stefanski and absorbed his training.
Mayfield had not finished figuring this out. He spoke on the ear of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt while Case Keenum was the quarterback for the two.
Fuller than a SpongeBob SquarePants, Mayfield took everything he learned to center JC Tretter. The two snapped their previous reps before returning to the pitch for a much smoother session.
Mayfield discusses tight ends, takes the words of his coaches and throws his teammates. Even when he’s not throwing it, he’s active.
Mayfield goes wild for Hollywood
Rashard Higgins walks with soothing bluster. He scored a 40-yard touchdown halfway through practice and showcased his iconic walk on the red carpet.
I will never forget Mayfield’s sprint for Higgins. Think about the same gallop he’s trotting when Nick Chubb goes wild. It’s fun, loose, and comprehensive. As Baker approached Higgins after he won the competition, FirstEnergy Stadium roared.
It’s as authentic as leadership gets.
Lots of leadership in Cleveland
On Saturday, Donovon Peoples-Jones had a few drops. Not serious. For 10 days, the camp belonged to DPJ. But he didn’t have it on Saturday. After a fall followed by an out of bounds fumble, Odell Beckham Jr. spent a few minutes with him. The two appeared to be engaged in a tactical conversation. Then Mayfield and Jarvis Landry came by.
The 2021 Browns are bursting with talent. Their leadership matches, and it starts with # 6.
“We appreciate it more than you think,” Mayfield said before it all began. “We’re in the same boat, Cleveland. “
