CLEVELAND, Ohio – Baker Mayfield’s ears perked up Thursday when at least one site suggested the Browns should consider negotiating for Texas quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The Fansided Dawg Pound Daily wrote an article saying Watson would represent an upgrade, then tweeted it with the caption “#Browns in Cleveland must be thinking of Deshaun Watson”.
Mayfield tweeted it with the response, “Some of you all ‘browns’ are funny” which means ‘browns fans’.
Mayfield, who has gone 11-5 this season and lost to the Chiefs, 22-17 in the AFC division round, has mostly stayed out of the wars on Twitter this season but was unable to s’ prevent it this time.
But he probably has nothing to fear anyway.
The Browns are unlikely to pursue such a trade because they are attached to Mayfield and because the Texans have no plans to trade the triple Pro Bowler despite the fact that he has said he wants still be treated Thursday, the day the team hired David Culley as their new head coach.

Culley, the longtime follower of Chiefs coach Andy Reid and former Ravens assistant head coach, wide receivers coach and 2019-20 passing play coordinator, echoed those sentiments and seemed confident he could level the waters.
“Deshaun Watson is a Houston Texan,” he says. “That’s all I worried about and all I knew. Whatever anyone said about what he wanted to do, he’s a Texan from Houston. I want him to be a Houston Texan. The reason I’m in this position today is because I knew he was going to be a Houston Texan. The external things that have been said do not concern me.
“The most important thing for me is to know what I can do after speaking with (everyone).”
Meanwhile, the Browns have made it clear that Mayfield is their quarterback of the future without calling him a “ franchise quarterback. ”
“He’s done a great job this year,” Browns general manager Andrew Berry said after the season. “It got us to our first playoff appearance in eons. We have achieved 12 wins, played winning football all year round, developed a very strong relationship with Kevin [Stefanski] and the attacking staff and really, as I mentioned last week, he really thrives every week on and off the pitch. We are very, very satisfied with him.
