Baker Mayfield’s MRI shows no structural damage to left shoulder, source says; Grant Delpit Grateful for Debut: Browns Takeout

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Baker Mayfield underwent an MRI scan on his injured left shoulder on Monday, but it showed no structural damage, a league source told cleveland.com.

It’s a huge relief for the Browns, who got scared in Sunday’s 31-21 win over the Texans when the quarterback’s left arm hung briefly by his side, and he winced in pain on the pitch.

“He’s in pain,” said coach Kevin Stefanski. ” He is fine.

Mayfield acknowledged that the shoulder “kind of went in and out. Nothing too big of a deal.”

He admitted it hurt for the rest of the game after injuring himself with 9:44 left at the half. He briefly ran to the locker room, perhaps to put his shoulder back in place, but came out running almost immediately. Case Keenum warmed up on the sidelines, but there was no way Mayfield would come out.

“I felt it a lot – thank you for asking,” he said, to chuckle. ” Everything was fine. We played the rest of the game, didn’t we?

He received advice Monday from teammate Kareem Hunt after injuring his shoulder while trying to tackle Justin Reid, who kidnapped Mayfield when rookie wide receiver Anthony Schwartz suddenly pulled into his road.

“Honestly, I was nervous,” Hunt said. “I said to him, ‘Let me attack him next time.’ It was definitely a shock. I wanted to help him off the pitch. It would have been a great time. Case was getting ready, and he’s a great quarterback too. It would have been another tough loss if it had happened, but I’m surprised he came back very quickly and I’m happy.

Mayfield said of Reid: “I think he realized it was me standing right there, so he put his head down and ran after me.”

He might be a bit limited in training this week, but as he noted on Sunday “It’s my left, though. God gave me two. ”

Grant Delpit grateful to be back

Delpit was happy to make his NFL debut on Sunday after being absent all last season with his Achilles tendon rupture, an injury that costs the careers of about 26% of NFL players who suffer from it.

He made an impact right away, registering five tackles, a Davis Mills sack-fumble and a near interception.

“It was great to be there,” he said. “It felt good. It had been a minute since I last dressed and went out. I am happy that I was able to be there for my team and to be truly blessed by God. It has been a long journey. I’m glad it started like this. Hopefully we will continue throughout the season. “

He felt the support of the FirstEnergy Stadium fans.

“I love the Dawg Pound, man,” he said. “Thank you all for the support. Seeing me there I know many of you were all waiting for it. For us to win our first home game is wonderful. Thank you all for the support. It was crazy there. I hope we can keep going. ”

Delpit admitted it was difficult to come back from Achilles to sustain a hamstring injury that sidelined him for most of training camp.

“It was definitely aggravating with the hamstrings,” he said. “The Achilles was what he was. It was a long process. With the hamstrings, it was on the same leg. It was certainly aggravating, but the training staff got me right. They helped me a lot in week 1. I really wanted to play, but they just wanted to make sure I was perfectly fine, which turned out to be the best decision. I’m happy for everyone who has helped me get to where I am. Hopefully we stay healthy this season and continue on this path we are on. “

Denzel Ward will try to bounce back from a tough day

Ward will be working hard to come back from one of his worst career games against the Texans, in which he allowed three assists on Tyrod Taylor’s first touchdown and five of six targets in total. Ward was ranked 18th out of 19 Browns defensemen by Pro Football Focus with a score of 45.4. The only one down was safety back John Johnson III, who scored 42.4.

Taylor and his replacement Mills got a score of 118.8 targeting Ward, which doesn’t fit him.

“I would tell you good times and times that I’m sure he wants to come back to,” Stefanski said. “I know I can already see him working on the technique he will be working on this week and deepening the technique. You are going against very good wide receivers. They’re going to play here and there, and that’s really how you react. Good times and certainly times he’s going to be working really hard this week. “

Demetric Felton gets bigger role and helps mitigate Jarvis Landry loss

Felton, the Browns’ sixth-round pick at UCLA, caught just two assists, but made them count. The first was his 33-yard spinning and rumbling touchdown, and the second was an 18-yard second-half. Felton will take on some of Landry’s slots duties and help alleviate Landry’s absence over the next few weeks.

“We are excited about Demetric,” Stefanski said. “Obviously we were delighted to add him in the sixth round of the draft. He worked very hard throughout the spring and summer. As you have seen it has been in the waiting room and in the wide receiver room.

“That’s the kind of thing you do with rookies and develop their role based on what they’re willing to handle. He obviously did a great play for us on this screen and put in a great individual effort. He made plays as a turner. It’s our job to develop their roles. Really, the truth is, these guys are winning their role. I think Demetric does.
