I regret every day that the suit Baldur Gate 3 the experiment is not yet over, but we are getting there. Today, developer Larian released the fourth patch for the Divinity: Original Sin 2 after/Baldur Gate tri-suite, what he calls its “biggest patch yet”. Top notch features include the druid class, loaded dice to keep you from critical failing all the time, and new corpses to communicate with, if you like that sort of thing.
The druid is definitely the centerpiece here. If you play as such, you gain the ability to transform yourself into a whole mess of animals, including a terrible wolf, bear, cat, crow, and spider. In most games, these would work as simple combat modifiers, but BG3, the new shapes mean alternate route options, the ability to talk to animals, and new quest results. On top of that, the first act of the game’s main story essentially revolves around a circle of druids, which means if you’re a druid yourself, the story is dramatically different.
Other features are smaller, but still impactful. Loaded dice prevent you from rolling series of hyper-lucky or hyper-unlucky rolls when engaging in dialogue or taking actions. Sounds helpful, given the number of times I’ve reloaded frustration saves due to ridiculously bad rolls. That said, if you want pure RNG you can turn the feature off.
The Speak with the Dead ability also got a big upgrade, adding some sleek cutscenes and, of course, more corpses. Larian points out that if you get lost because you don’t pay attention to the story and kill everyone, now you can just talk to their ghoulish remains. It’s funny!
There are also loads of graphics and quality of life improvements, which should appeal to people who like to look at things and be alive, respectively. The patch is now available on Steam, GOG, and Stadia, the latter of which you can only use if you know the Speak with the Dead spell in real life.
