The bodies of two dead children were discovered Wednesday during a routine check in Maryland, authorities said.

Officers from the Essex Police Station of the Baltimore County Police Department stopped a vehicle just after 11 p.m. when they found the children dead.

A police spokeswoman told Fox News that the relationship between the driver and the children is under investigation. She did not say how the children were found or whether the deaths were suspicious. Their ages have not been disclosed.

The unidentified driver has been taken into custody but no one has been charged, she said.

The bodies were taken to the chief medical examiner’s office.
