OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Baltimore Ravens punter Sam Koch is not scheduled to play for the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, which would end the third longest active streak in a row in the NFL at 239.
Koch is on the reserve / COVID-19 list after his Wednesday test came back inconclusive. It would mark the first time he missed a game in his 15-year NFL career.
The only players who currently have longer streaks in the NFL are Dallas Cowboys LP Long Snapper Ladouceur (252 games) and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers (240). Koch’s streak is also the Ravens’ franchise record.
“I’m pretty sure he has to be eliminated based on the number of days,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after Friday practice. “That’s how I’m reading it right now. I just guess he won’t be there.
Harbaugh later added: “I don’t expect it to be beyond Sunday.”
This indicates that Koch has not tested positive and will only need to be quarantined for five days. He would be available if Baltimore (10-5) qualifies for the playoffs. The Ravens can grab a wild card spot by beating the Bengals (4-10-1). If the Ravens lose, Baltimore can still secure a playoff berth if the Colts or the Cleveland Browns lose.
Johnny Townsend, who hasn’t been in an NFL game since 2018, will replace Koch on Sunday. The Raiders’ 2018 fifth-round pick, Townsend was signed by Baltimore on Thursday and has had full practice with the team.
“We are very happy to have him,” said Harbaugh. “He had a good performance today in training. We expect him to do very well in the game.”
