OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is struggling with “a little push to the back,” offensive coordinator Greg Roman said ahead of practice Thursday.
“I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Roman said. “But we’ll just have to wait and see. I think he’ll be in good shape. We’ll wait and see.”
Jackson was sidelined on Wednesday with a sore back, and Roman declined to say whether the former NFL MVP would adjust on Thursday.
Jackson has never missed a game with injury during his four-year NFL career. The only games he didn’t play were the 2019 season finale (when the Ravens had already clinched the AFC’s No.1 seed) and Week 12 last season in Pittsburgh (after being tested positive for COVID-19).
Jackson took a few tough hits and was sacked four times, a season-high, in Sunday’s 19-17 win over the Detroit Lions. In three games this season, Jackson appears to have faced more tackles than in the past and has been tagged 44 times, a league-high, five more than any other quarterback.
With running backs JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards out for the season, Jackson has been Baltimore’s main ground threat, placing fourth in the NFL with 251 yards. He looked good when he spoke to reporters for eight minutes on Wednesday.
This is the second week in a row that Jackson has missed a workout. Last Thursday he was ill. Jackson went on to beat the Lions, joining Patrick Mahomes, Kurt Warner and Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks in NFL history with 32 wins in their first 40 career starts.
“We really want him and everyone to come out every practice,” said Roman. “When they’re not, we adjust accordingly. Fortunately, we’ve been in this system for three years now. With Lamar it’s a little different from a guy who just came in.”
