A Baltimore woman was arrested Wednesday when police found the bodies of her young niece and nephew in her car, according to the Baltimore County government.
The remains of the two children, aged seven and five, were discovered during a traffic stop after Nicole Michelle Johnson was pulled over for speeding. The car she was driving reportedly had false West Virginia labels and was not insured or registered, according to ABC 4.
The bodies were said to have been Johnson’s trunk for months, and one of them may have been sequestered in the vehicle since May 2020.
Johnson told investigators she repeatedly punched the girl in May, causing her to fall and hit her head. Johnson then placed his remains in a suitcase in his car. When the young boy died two months ago, Johnson put his body next to his sister’s in the trunk, ABC 4 noted.
An autopsy of the children revealed that both children were severely malnourished.
An officer discovered the bodies after opening the safe and smelled the decomposition.
Prior to the discovery of the officer, Johnson reportedly said, “You’re all going to see me on the news, you are all going to see me on the news to make my big debut.”
Johnson now faces several charges, including first-degree child abuse.
“It was truly a devastating incident – one that not only shocked our community, but significantly affected our patrollers, forensic technicians and detectives,” Baltimore County Police Chief Melissa Hyatt said in a statement.
She added, “I am grateful that the heart-wrenching details of this matter were uncovered so thoroughly and quickly, which brought this tragedy to an early end. I want to congratulate all of our members of the County Police Department. Baltimore who have worked tirelessly throughout this investigation to bring justice to these young innocent victims. “
According to CNN, Johnson is being held without bail and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 27.
