In the Thursday, October 7 episode of View, businesswoman Barbara Corcoran was the guest alongside a colleague Shark aquarium stars Daymond John and Marc Cuban. While there to promote the final season of the hit series, she made an out of color joke on Whoopi Goldberg’s body that was deemed anything but funny.
It all started when the show’s newest and first black guest “shark,” Emma Grede, was raised. She is the co-founder of the famous jeans company Good American and one of the founding partners of the sports and loungewear line SKIMS. Grede will join the list of great business minds helping budding entrepreneurs (with great ideas) to take their business to the next level. When the guest Seen Co-host and political commentator Ana Navarro complimented Grede’s jeans saying they were for “everyone,” Whoopi said she would try them on on one condition.
“Will they adapt to this COVID [butt]? ”she joked of her body, to which Navarro and fellow host Sunny Hostin agreed they would because they fit them too.
“Okay! If they match two COVID butts, you’ll be fine.”
That’s when Corcoran decided to step in, directing his comment to Whoopi.
“And when you’re done with those jeans and decide you don’t like them, give them to me, I’ll make two pairs. [laughs]. “
The audience immediately knew the comment was inappropriate, moaning rather than laughing. As for the comedy legend, his face looked upset, then confused, then slightly indifferent. That’s when Navarro stepped in to point out something about Corcoran’s attire.
“Let me tell you something,” she said. “Sara Haines and Jill Biden were already wearing this dress on TV! Don’t come for me!
The moment happened around 4:33 am:
The consensus on social media, because Whoopi’s name started trending on Twitter, was that the comment was rude. The news spread enough that at the end of the day Corcoran released a statement, on camera, saying she was sorry if people were offended.
“I just came back from View and I saw my old friend Whoopi. As you well know, she has a phenomenal sense of humor and I’ve known Whoopi for years. I made a joke at Whoopi’s expense, what I now realize wasn’t funny. For anyone I may have unintentionally offended, I just want to say I’m so sorry.
Whoopi took his comments as gracious, saying, “We’ve been friends forever and I know your humor, I knew you were kidding.”
But as people have pointed out, this kind of humor should not be encouraged. Whoopi, over the past two years, has been through COVID quarantine, like the rest of us. On top of that, she has had a few high-profile health issues, ranging from fatal pneumonia and sepsis to sciatica pain so “horrible” that she was hospitalized for it. That being said, if she’s gaining weight while recovering, that’s her business and she can joke about it if she wants to, but not just anyone else.
