ST. PETERSBURG, FL, USA – The WTA announced today that Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic will advance to the World No. 1 of the WTA doubles for the first time in her career, when the rankings are released on Monday, July 15th.
"It's a great honor to become the world's number one doubles," said Strycova. "I'm so happy to win my first Grand Slam and I could not have done it without my amazing Hsieh partner. We have done so much work and I am proud of all our accomplishments together. "
By winning her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, alongside Hsieh Su-Wei, former world number-two in the WTA, Strycova became the seventh woman representing the Czech Republic to reach the top spot in the doubles standings. She joins her compatriots Helena Sukova, Jana Novotna, Kveta Peschke, Lucie Safarova, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
Strycova also becomes the 43rd woman overall in the WTA doubles world standings, won by Kristina Mladenovic, who has held him for the past five weeks. At 33 years and 109 days, Strycova becomes the second oldest player to make his debut as the world's No. 1 doubles winner after Kveta Peschke in 2011 (35 years, 361 days).
