Watch: Barbra Streisand had other ideas for the remake of A star is born

Barbra Streisand has revealed that she hopes to see Beyonce and Will Smith star in the recent remake of A star is born saying the movie was “the wrong idea”.

The 79-year-old musician and actor starred in the 1976 version of the film about the rise of an unknown singer with the help of a self-destructive rocker – played by Kris Kristofferson.

The film was remade in 2018 with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, but Streisand has now said she thinks their version was wrong.

Streisand told an Australian TV show Sunday project: “At first when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyonce, and I thought, that’s interesting.

“Really making things different, different kind of music, integrated actors, I thought that was a great idea. So I was surprised when I saw how it looked like the version I made in 1976. ”

Gaga and Cooper’s version of A star is born was nominated for eight Oscars and seven Baftas and grossed $ 436 million (£ 315 million) at the box office.

Streisand said she “can’t dispute success,” but added, “I don’t care so much about success as it is about originality.”

Cooper and Gaga claimed during the film’s promotion in 2018 that Streisand gave their remake his approval.

Cooper said, “She gave us a blessing. Everyone was so excited that she was here. We just looked at each other and we were like, ‘Wow. How are we here right now? “”

Gaga added, “She was so, so nice.”

But Streisand said later that same year, “I thought it was going to be very different and have a multiracial cast, and the music was going to be rap. But it’s more like the movie I made.”

A star is born was originally made in 1937 starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March as an aspiring actress and Hollywood veteran, and was remade as a musical in 1954 starring Judy Garland and James Mason.
