Paris Saint-Germain took a big step forward towards the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with a 4-1 win in Barcelona on Tuesday. Kylian Mbappe scored a hat trick and Moise Kean added one as Mauricio Pochettino’s men came on a goal to punish Ronald Koeman’s squeaky defense.
It was an exciting first half of football as both teams found the back of the net and created chances they couldn’t grab. Barca managed a perfect penalty from Lionel Messi after Layvin Kurzawa was on trial for tripping Antoine Griezmann in the penalty area, but PSG retaliated with Mbappe who shot well past Marc-Andre ter Stegen with a sublime help from Marco Verratti.
Both teams have had their chance at times with PSG, lucky that Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele weren’t sharper in front of goal and Barca grateful for Ter Stegen’s quick thinking and reflexes as well as Mauro Icardi’s flashing header at the first post that went right next to it. Idrissa Gueye was particularly lucky not to land a second yellow card after opening 45 minutes, but Verratti’s velcro touch and impeccable timing made him the absolute star of the show at Camp Nou.
PSG turned the screw in the second half and flew out of the blocks in search of a second goal, it took 20 minutes to get it when Alessandro Florenzi’s ball fell to him to slam at home . However, Kean’s goal took less time to arrive with the Italian returning home on a free kick from Leandro Paredes five minutes later. Ter Stegen did what he could in the second half but his defense gave him up as Mbappe majestically rolled the ball past him to complete his hat trick five minutes from time after substitute Julian Draxler caught it on a famous night for Les Parisiens.
