Attorney General Bill Barr said Friday that he has appointed Ed O'Callaghan as Acting Attorney General following the departure of Rod Rosenstein from the Department of Justice.

O 'Callaghan, who was Rosenstein's deputy chief, will be second in command of the Department of Justice until the Senate confirms the appointment of a new MP. Jeffrey Rosen has been appointed, but not yet confirmed, to the position of Deputy Attorney General.

DEPUTY AG ROD ROSENSTEIN PRESENTS ITS RESIGNATION

"Ed is an unparalleled advocate whose intelligence, competence, judgment and experience are evident in every job he does," Barr said in a statement. "That's why I asked him to serve as Acting Deputy Attorney General until the Senate confirms the successor of Rosenstein Deputy Attorney General, Jeffrey Rosen. I am confident that Ed will be an excellent Acting Deputy Attorney General during this interim period. "

Rosenstein, who has frequently found himself in the political line of fire because of his role in the investigation by the special council in Russia and whose departure is long overdue, submitted his resignation last month to President Trump, effective May 11.

Rosenstein, 54, previously served as Deputy Attorney General and US Attorney. He remained at the Department of Justice until the completion of the investigation of the special advocate Robert Mueller.
