The FBI arrested North Carolina resident Edwin Hiatt on Thursday after the death of TV chief Barry Crane in 1985, the Los Angeles police department said in a statement.

Crane has produced or directed episodes of television shows such as "Mission: Impossible", "Chips" and "The Man of Six Million Dollars", according to IMDb.com. He was also a world class bridge champion.

A housekeeper discovered Crane's body wrapped in bedding on the floor of his North Hollywood residence's garage, police said. He seemed to have been clubbed and strangled.

The Crane Cadillac was stolen and later found with forensic evidence, including a fingerprint that detectives compared last year to Hiatt.

Hiatt was arrested in the city of Rutherford College in the repair shop where he worked. Authorities had collected his discarded cigarettes and a foam cup to check for evidence, reported WSOS TV, a subsidiary of CNN.

Hiatt was 18 when Crane died.

"It's a different life today," Hiatt said – with his long white hair back and his beard – while the police took him to jail.

When asked if he was involved in the killing, he replied, "Everything is possible at the time because I suspected drugs."

The LAPD said that Mr. Hiatt had informed the detectives on March 8 that he had killed Crane. The LA District Attorney's Office has filed a lawsuit against him for murder and a warrant has been issued.

The pattern is not clear.

Crane, from Detroit, was 57 years old.
