United States men's national team quickly left 2019 FIBA World Cup lose against France 89-79 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
With the loss, the United States was eliminated and it goes without saying that it was not the result that most people wanted to see. However, Mitchell, Marcus Smart (11 points) and Kemba Walker (10 points) were the only Americans to finish in double digits.
In addition, the United States shot only 44.6% of the field and was rebounded 44-28. France was led by a 22-point effort from Orlando Magic guard Evan Fournier, who toppled five. The Americans also had no answer for Mitchell's teammate Rudy Gobert, who conceded a dominant performance. 21 points and 16 rebounds.
One of Fournier's teammates, Nikola Vucevic, had time to comment on France's solid performance. Vucevic joked that Fournier would not let his teammates forget his performances in Wednesday's elimination match.
One of the most striking stories of the summer is that the majority of NBA stars have not chosen to participate in the FIBA World Cup. It is certainly a valid statement not to blame the list that has been made. Most of the league's top talent have chosen to turn down the offer and not engage their summer to play for their country. Walker was one of the biggest names in the US squad, but he struggled in Wednesday's quarter-final defeat. The Boston Celtics star goalie scored just two of his nine shots without a 25-minute assist on the floor.
The San Antonio Spurs head coach, Gregg Popovich, is a future Hall of Fame member and one of the brightest minds in basketball. But Popovich can only manage the talent of which he is a part.
Despite his praise, this does not stop fans from asking Duke legend Mike Krzyzewski to come back and coach the team.
The United States would have faced Argentina in the semifinals if they won Wednesday. This is certainly not the result that many Americans were hoping for, but it seems that the general reaction is that talent may not have been as successful on the American side.
