“Mogul Mowgli” director Bassam Tariq is in talks to direct the Marvel Studios film “Blade”, starring Mahershala Ali.
The two-time Oscar winner has been announced to play the Vampire Hunter at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. The highly anticipated film is currently undated, but is slated to be part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In February, “Watchmen” screenwriter Stacy Osei-Kuffour was confirmed to write the screenplay for the film, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in production.
Wesley Snipes previously played the half-vampire superhero in a box office blockbuster trilogy, starting with 1998’s “Blade”. The series, which included 2002’s “Blade II” and 2004 “Blade Trinity,” focused on the vigilante, a human who possesses the strength of a vampire and protects humans from leeches. Feige was co-producer of “Trinity”.
The long-awaited reboot came after Ali, who starred in the Marvel series “Luke Cage” for Netflix, let Marvel Studios know that he wanted to take on the role of Snipes’ superhero. Marvel Studios eagerly accepted Ali’s speech and the rest is cinematic history.
On Tariq’s camera side, the filmmaker’s most publicized film to date was 2020’s “Mogul Mowgli”, starring Riz Ahmed. Tariq’s documentary and short filmography includes “Thes Birds Walk”, “11/8/16”, “Red Mountain Choir”, “Wa’ad”, “Mogambo” and “Ghosts of Sugar Land”.
With the hiring of Tariq, the filmmaker would join a lineup of Phase Four directors – who are also the most diverse group in the MCU to date – including Cate Shortland (“Black Widow”), Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi and the legend the Ten Rings “), Chloe Zhao (” The Eternals “), Jon Watts (” Spider-Man: No Way Home “,” Fantastic Four “), Sam Raimi (” Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ” ), Taika Waititi (“Thor: Love and Thunder”), Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), Nia DaCosta (“The Marvels”), Peyton Reed (“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”) and James Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”).
The deadline was the first to report news of Tariq’s involvement in “Blade.” He is replaced by Range Media Partners, WME and lawyers Daniel Passman and Tara Kole.
