Gotham City has a new protector.

“In the Heights” star Leslie Grace and “Five Feet Apart” actress Haley Lu Richardson are emerging as Barbara Gordon’s top contenders in HBO’s next superhero movie “Batgirl” Max.

Testing for the role has already started. Isabela Merced, who appeared in “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and “Dora and the Lost City of Gold”, and Zoey Deutch, star of “Zombieland: Double Tap” and “Why Him? Have already tested or will test for the role. It’s possible that the search will extend beyond those names – because it’s, you know, research – and today’s favorite is tomorrow’s casting favorite as well.

“Batgirl” will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the director duo behind “Bad Boys for Life,” one of the few box office hits of 2020. Christina Hodson (“The Flash”) wrote the screenplay . The film comes as HBO Max continues to strengthen its original programming in an effort to attract subscribers. Superhero streaming shows have worked well for Disney Plus, which has garnered a lot of buzz for comic book fares like “Loki,” “WandaVision,” and “Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” DC Films has been busy lately, concluding “The Batman” with Robert Pattinson and filming “The Flash” and a sequel to “Aquaman”. James Gunn’s highly R-rated super-team movie “The Suicide Squad,” debuts next month.

The deadline announced that the tests for the lead role were taking place and named the top candidates for the role, while TheWrap reported the emergence of Grace and Richardson as favorites. “Batgirl” will center on Barbara Gordon, the offspring of crime-fighting Commissioner James Gordon.
