As the new season of The CW Batwoman will feature Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder as the new heroine wearing the sleek black and red Batsuit, audiences won’t be left in the dark about what will become of Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane.
“It’s something that will solve,” assured showrunner Caroline Dries during the CW virtual panel this morning. As fans recall, Rose announced her release from the series after Season 1 ended last year. While Dries played shyly when asked exactly when viewers would get that resolution, she teased: “I will say, as a storyteller, it will be a lot of twists and turns. It will be a huge roller coaster for all of our characters and I hope it sounds like a very impressive and satisfying resolution.

Ahead of the show’s debut this Sunday, Dries was joined by Leslie whose character Ryan discovers Kate Kane’s Batsuit as well as a new responsibility. “The costume has always been a legacy,” Leslie said.
“It’s the costume, but the person must also be worthy of wearing that heritage,” she continued. “And that’s the kind of trip Ryan takes because when she first gets the costume, like me, when I first got the job, you wonder if you’re worthy of what this is.” really represents and what this legacy means… you I’ll find out if she becomes worthy of it, but it’s really the journey of owning her Batwoman.
Unlike Kate, Ryan has no relationship with the existing characters in the show.
“I wanted a girl that no one was connected to,” Dries said. “We don’t have family ties. She’s nobody, that’s the whole problem. She is invisible. it is lost in the system. And so it was easier to fit her into the bat world and the bat team because she is that woman and they all work together.
Described as likable, messy, a bit awkward and untamed, Ryan has nothing to do with Kate Kane. With no one in her life to keep her on track, she has spent years as a drug dealer, avoiding GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in his van with his factory. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and insanely unruly.
Leslie’s casting represented a groundbreaking moment for the franchise as she became the first black actress to play Batwoman onscreen. The show has already made positive efforts in the quest to increase representation. When it appears, Batwoman gained attention for being the first superhero series in television history to feature an LGBTQ character as the central character.
“When I was growing up, I didn’t see versions of myself on screen, especially in superhero movies and TV shows. I remember when I was growing up I saw two black female superheroes, and technically Catwoman isn’t really a superhero. So I saw one and Halle Berry played both, ”Leslie said. “So being able to be a vessel in this industry that empowers other people who are like me or who are walking the same path,” she added, “I think that’s important.”
“I think we deserve to be represented.”
Season 2 of Batwoman premieres Sunday, Jan. 17 on the CW.
