First round – Phillip Island
Race three
Alvaro Bautista is again away from the peloton when the lights went out Sunday afternoon at 15h for the third and final World Superbike race of the first round of the championship held at Phillip Island during the last weekend of February .
The KRT duo, Leon Haslam and Jonathan Rea, gave the hunt, but a consistent 1 minute and 30 second run of Bautista during the opening rounds proved to be too difficult for them.
Behind the Kawasaki Racing Team pair, it was a battle for supremacy among Yamaha riders. Melandri and Van Der Mark proved too fast for Lowes as they competed for fourth place.
Melandri won the battle for Yamaha supremacy by separating from Van Der Mark and as the race approached, Melandri began attacking the double act of the KRT. At the front, Bautista led by eight seconds and in a different race …
Rea had followed Haslam for the first 15 laps before he could finally overtake his teammate. Haslam had none, but had been pushed back to turn four. This little tussle had allowed Melandri to really start biting his heels. At the start of the next round, Haslam was too deep at the first corner to allow Rea to return. It was a good recovery, and Haslam was back with him at the exit of Southern Loop. Bautista was already halfway to the airport …
The battle for the other places on the podium was really warming up. Rea, Haslam and Melandri have nothing to do, while Michael Van der Mark has also joined this party.
Haslam and Rea, however, responded to the Yamaha challenge by dismissing Melandri and Van der Mark.
As Rea and Haslam got the last lap, Bautista was taking his plane back home … In fact, he was leading almost 20 seconds, despite the fact that he was slowing down the pace in the last few laps and that he released the throttle pedal to take the checkered flag still with a 12-second pad on the KRT duo.
