What originally looked like a one-sided defeat turned into one of the best basketball games of recent memory Sunday. Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Baylor Bears clashed at the NCAA women's basketball tournament game, and Baylor dominated the game until the fourth quarter.
Notre Dame fought back hard and eventually came back from a huge deficit to tie the game and finally take advantage at the end of the fourth quarter, her first of the match. They made trips back and forth to the very last seconds, but that is Baylor who won, 82-81.
Things went wrong for Notre Dame at the beginning, while Baylor had a first defeat and immediately took the lead in front of an 11-3 lead. At just under seven minutes into the second quarter, Baylor had a lead of 33-16.
Arike Ogunbowale started the game at 3-on-12 and she did not get much help from her teammates, at least until the first period started to end. Notre Dame finally got hot and put nine in a row to dramatically reduce the gap.
Baylor led 43-31 at half-time, but it could have been worse for Notre Dame given the start of the match.
Baylor had a big impact on his lineup at the end of the third quarter, when Lauren Cox was injured and stayed on the pitch for a while. They had to pull her off the wheelchair. Baylor then had a 12-point lead, Cox totaling 8 points and 8 rebounds before the injury.
Ogunbowale was hot early in the fourth quarter as Notre Dame slowly closed the gap. They got less than 4 points with 7 minutes to go. Five minutes from the end, Notre Dame tied at 74-74. They took their first lead of the match with 3:18 in the fourth quarter.
As you can see above, Marina Mabrey has really progressed and started to hit three. God, it made a difference. The match continued to be tied as teams traded buckets and free throws. 3.9 seconds from the end, Chloe Jackson scored for Baylor, giving him the advantage.
Ogunbowale was the victim of a foul just after, but he missed one of his two free throws and Baylor was able to kill the rest of the game.
Ogunbowale finished the game with 11 points out of 27 and 3 out of 5, with a total of 31 points. Mabrey finished with 21 points and 4 of 8. Jackson led the way for Baylor with 26 points on 13 out of 25 shots.
