– Under pressure from Princess Diana’s brother, the BBC said it would commission an outside investigation into how she got her family’s support for an interview in 1995. Charles Spencer accused Martin Bashir, who has conducted the interview, rigging documents to give the impression that people associated with the British Royal Family were selling information about Diana. The princess’s brother then introduced her to Bashir. “The BBC takes this very seriously and we want to find out the truth,” a BBC boss said, according to the Guardian. “We are in the process of commissioning a solid and independent investigation.” The broadcaster said Bashir, who is now the BBC’s religion editor, is unavailable for interview on the matter due to health concerns.

“A very dark cloud hangs over BBC journalism,” said Michael Grade, a former president of the BBC. The findings of the investigation should be made public, he said, by the BBC. “There is only one way to clear this up and that is with an independent investigation to be released.” Almost 23 million people watched live Diana told Bashir, “There were three of us in this marriage” – referring to the relationship between her husband, Prince Charles, and Camilla Parker-Bowles. Another UK broadcaster, ITV, said it plans to air an interview with a graphic designer who said Bashir asked him to produce the fake bank documents. The BBC absolved Bashir in 1996 but the creator did not; the news chief said Matt Wiessler “will no longer work for the BBC”. Wiessler, who is gone, said it was clear he had become “the downfall guy”. Now Wiessler says, “All I want is the BBC in this case to show up and honestly apologize.” (Read more stories from Martin Bashir.)
