– The BBC has apologized for a headline it published on the death of Phil Spector. When news of Spector’s death broke over the weekend, the news organization quickly released a headline that read: “Talented But Imperfect Producer Phil Spector Passes Away Aged 81”. However, complaints soon followed, with critics accusing the BBC of sugarcoating Spector’s 2009 murder conviction. British pop star Lily Allen was among them. “Roll our eyes on all the newspapers that deliberately downplay Phil Spector as a murderer in their headlines, then everyone (points out) points this out by linking to their articles, resulting in lots of clicks,” she tweeted. But she was far from alone. the London Economy rounds up other reviews, including multiple references that bore the trending serial killer name Fred West.
“Fred West was not a ‘talented but imperfect’ builder,” we read Tweeter. The BBC’s editors quickly agreed. “The story on the death of Phil Spector was published with a headline that did not meet our editorial standards,” the statement read. “This was changed in a matter of minutes and we also deleted a tweet that came out automatically with the original title. We apologize for the error.” The new title: “Pop producer jailed for murder dies at 81”.
