The Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy 75 years ago were successful, thanks in part to the odd-looking tanks imagined by an eccentric British officer named Percy Hobart.

Hobart's Funnies were not conventional tanks: they were designed to perform all kinds of tasks, from clearing minefields to laying bridges over trenches, through holes in reinforced concrete walls. Without them, the D-Day landings may not have been successful.
