AUSTIN, Texas – For Beanie Feldstein, her latest film "Booksmart" is not just about being a main woman.
The film, which marks the debut of Olivia Wilde's director, is centered on two high-level friends, Molly (Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever), who are trying to amuse four years of entertainment before the end of their studies. Amy identifies as a lesbian, but that's not all.
Screenwriter Katie Silberman (who also wrote "Set It Up", Netflix's favorite) explained why it was important that Amy's character focus more on her sexuality.
"Our friends who identify as a fag, that's the fifth thing you mention about them, if not the fifteenth. This is never the first thing you mention about them in real life. I think it was exciting to be able to make a movie like this one, it was one of the many qualities that we know when it will be mentioned. This obviously permeates your life, but it's not the quality that defines your life when you're with your best friend and so much activity is going on. "
Feldstein, 25, echoed the sentiment.
"It was completely meaningful for me to watch the movie. My partner is a woman, "said Feldstein. "There is a love scene between two girls and they fiddle with their sneakers and can not take off their jeans. All these moments, they make me tear because representation is really important. In addition, Kaitlyn's character is not the only gay character in the movie. So, what an incredible thing our movie does. I think if I could see our movie earlier, I would have found myself a little earlier. "
"Booksmart" will be released on May 24 th.
