Booksmart star Beanie Feldstein is set to star as Fanny Brice in Funny girl, which would serve as the first Broadway cover of the iconic musical premiered in 1964 with Barbra Streisand in the role. Performances are scheduled to begin in the spring of 2022 at a Broadway theater to be announced.
The new production is directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the angry thumb, spring
Awakening), with choreography by Ellénore Scott, tap dance choreography by Ayodele Casel, revised book Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots, La Cage Aux Folles) and the scenography by David Zinn. The cover is by Sonia Friedman Productions, Scott Landis and Chocolate Factory Productions.
The original Funny Girl, with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and a book by Isobel Lennart, was nominated for eight Tony Awards in 1964, including Best Musical. It tells the bittersweet story of Fanny Brice, whose unique comedic and vocal talent helps her grow from a young Brooklyn music hall performer to star, and her tumultuous relationship with
player Nicky Arnstein, originally played by Sydney Chaplin. It features the iconic tunes “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade”.

Feldstein, who landed a Golden Globe nomination for her role in 2019 directed Olivia Wilde Booksmart, is next to play Monica Lewinsky in FX’s Impeachment: American Crime Story which will start on September 7th. She also stars in A24’s upcoming animated series, The Humans, and stars as Harriet in Apple TV +’s upcoming animated series. Harriet spies on it.
“The first time I played Fanny Brice was at my third birthday party, in a head-to-toe leopard print outfit my mom made for me,” Feldstein said Wednesday. “So it’s safe to say that playing this iconic role, on Broadway and not in my family’s backyard, is truly my life’s dream come true. I’m immensely grateful to be able to do so alongside a creative team. also remarkable, and I can’t wait for audiences to come back to theaters!
Mayer’s credits include the rebirth of Little shop of horrors with Jonathan Groff, Adam Driver and Keri Russell in Burn it, madly (with songs from The Go-Go’s), Hedwig and the angry thumb, spring awakening and Green Day american idiot, among others.
Feldstein is replaced by WME, Linden Entertainment and attorney Daniel Passman.
