Bears’ 53-man roster screened after week two of training camp

The Chicago Bears completed their second week of training at training camp, and there were still plenty of stories, including performances from quarterbacks Justin Fields and Andy Dalton, as well as the introduction of linebacker Alec Ogletree.

When you look at this current roster, there are some potential surprises that could earn a spot on the roster, including wide receivers Rodney Adams and Jon’Vea Johnson. As training camp progresses, competition at the wide receiver, cornerback and offensive line will gain or lose places in the roster.

After week two of training camp, here are my projections for the Bears’ 53-player roster:

  1. Andy dalton
  2. Justin Champs
  3. Nick foles

No surprises here at the quarterback. As Fields continues to show his special arm talent and potential to challenge the position, Dalton remains the starter with Fields taking reps as a backup. And yes, Foles is still part of the team.

  1. David Montgomery
  2. Tarik cohen
  3. Damien williams
  4. Khalil Herbert
  5. Ryan nall

The top four backers appear to be locks, and there will be a competition for that fifth place between Nall and Artavis Pierce. But Nall could get the green light given his contributions on special teams.

  1. Allen Robinson
  2. Darnell mooney
  3. Marquise Goodwin
  4. Checkerboard Byrd
  5. Dazz New
  6. Javon wims

The top four places are safe bets at this point, leaving two places up for grabs. Rodney Adams and Jon’Vea Johnson have been impressive throughout the camp, and one or both of them could be vying for a spot. But before the start of the preseason, I keep Newsome and Wims in these last two places.

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

  1. Cole Kmet
  2. Jimmy graham
  3. Jesse james
  4. JP Holtz

No surprises with Kmet and Graham occupying the first two places. James continues to shine during training camp and he carves out a role as a third tight end. Holtz is expected to secure last place due to his versatility as a full-back and special teams contributor.

  1. Teven Jenkins
  2. Cody whitehair
  3. Sam mustipher
  4. James daniels
  5. Germain Ifedi
  6. Elie Wilkinson
  7. Larry Borom
  8. Alex Bars

There is a lot of uncertainty on the offensive line right now. But assuming everyone is healthy and ready to go, the starting five are locked in, as are some key stash from Wilkinson, Borom and the Chicago Swiss Army Knife Bars.

  1. Akiem Hicks
  2. Eddie goldman
  3. Bilal Nichols
  4. Mario edwards
  5. Angelo Blackson
  6. Khyiris Tonga

The Bears have their defensive line group with Hicks, Goldman and Nichols in the lead, and key rotating parts at Edwards, Blackson and Tonga.

  1. Roquan smith
  2. Danny Trevathan
  3. Alec Ogletree
  4. Christian jones

The Bears may well have their best inside linebacker depth in some time, which has a lot to do with the late addition of veteran Alec Ogletree, who made a solid impression in his first week of training. At this point, it would be a surprise if Ogletree wasn’t on the list.

  1. Khalil mack
  2. Robert quinn
  3. Jeremiah Attaochu
  4. Trevis Gipson

Chicago’s pass rush is looking for a rebound year, and they just might have the squad to reach the quarterback. With Mack and Quinn in the lead, the Bears have solid depth in Attaochu and Gipson, who both flashed during camp.

Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

  1. Jaylon johnson
  2. Kindle Vildor
  3. Duke Shelley
  4. Desmond Trufant
  5. Thomas Graham Jr.
  6. Artie burns

The Bears have a few questions at the cornerback, starting with who lines up in front of Johnson. At this point, it’s a battle between Vildor, Trufant, and Burns, who could all make the list. In the niche, it will come down to Shelley and Graham Jr., who should all be on the list.

Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

  1. Eddie jackson
  2. Tashaun Gipson
  3. Deon Bush
  4. DeAndre Houston-Carson

The Bears did not have their two best safeties in training last week with Jackson and Gipson both sidelined with injuries. But Bush and Houston-Carson, both of which are locks, have solidly fulfilled their roles.

Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

  1. Kicker: Cairo Santos
  2. Gambler: Pat O’Donnell
  3. Long snapper: Patrick Scales

No question who will lock these places on the special team roster.
