The Bears shake up their punt return game. The team announced on Tuesday that they had given up special teams specialist Nsimba Webster and acquired receiver / returner Jakeem Grant from the Dolphins. According to Tom Pelissero, the Bears sent a 2023 sixth-round pick to Miami in exchange for Grant.
The Bears called on Webster on waivers for the 49ers ahead of the start of the regular season to help with punt returns and punt and kick coverage. However, he hadn’t been very effective as a returning player, missing a catch and gaining just 13 total yards on four returns. Webster also had four tackles on cover.
Grant, meanwhile, gained 59 yards on eight punt returns and 46 yards on two punt returns. During his career, he returned 101 punts for 978 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned 89 kicks for 2,206 yards and two touchdowns.
So far this season, rookie running back Khalil Herbert has handled kicking returns. But with David Montgomery set to miss about a month with a knee injury and Damien Williams battling an ATV injury, the addition of Grant could allow Herbert to focus solely on racing, if need be.
