The Chicago Bears have accomplished something that very few teams have accomplished since 2000: they defeated the Broncos in Denver during the first two weeks of September in a wild 16-14 win. As my colleague R. J. White pointed out earlier this week than in 1975, the Broncos were 48-6 at home in weeks 1 and 2 (including 22-1 since 2000). We can do that 22-2 now since 2000.
The match took a while to start – with only nine points combined at halftime – but what followed at the last quarter was a sequence of crazy events. The Bears retained a 13-6 lead over the Broncos when Joe Flacco took advantage on his own line of 38-yard fronts and that he remained 2:48 to win. Flacco converted several 4th and 10-yard situations each time before finishing the course with a touchdown pass to Emmanuel Sanders.
Sanders did an incredible job dragging his feet and clinging to football.
Shortly after the score, freshman head coach Vic Fangio, was prepared for the 2-point conversion, but Denver was called for a late match. After missing the extra point, the Bears were declared offside and Denver had the chance to play their original 2-point conversion game. The Broncos converted to take a 14-13 lead.
Just when you thought it might be the end of scoring in what was a matter of scoring little until the last quarter, the Bears still had some magic. Mitchell Trubisky recovered the ball with 0:31 seconds and a time-out from his own 25-meter line. Facing a 4th and 15 of his own 40-yard line, Trubisky found his No. 1 target – Allen Robinson – for a 25-yard gain. The game timer expired, but it was later decided that Trubisky was calling the timeout with 0:01 seconds.
All the pressure has been shifted to the Chicago kicking situation – again. The Bears fans have probably had a flashback on the 2018 playoffs, but this time, the first-year kicker in Chicago, Eddy Pineiro, scored on a 52-yard field goal for the win.
