LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Bears head coach Matt Nagy has put more pressure on Chicago kickers on the final minicamp day.
After a struggling off season, Nagy turned to Elliott Fry and Eddy Pineiro on every attempt to get a 40-yard field goal on Thursday.
The stakes were high.
If either of the scorers scored a missed goal, the full alignment would have to undergo a team preparation test in the second half of the practice.
With the entire team looking in silence, Fry and Pineiro stomped, and Nagy abruptly stopped the practice and sent everyone home for the summer break.
"We put some heat – shocking – on the kickers for team conditioning," Nagy said. "They both nailed 40 riders in the center, so our guys came out of the gas, which was good, so if you hear applause, that's why.
"It was a victory for them today. And then, what's good is that I took a step ahead of myself and I said: Do you want to double or nothing for the start of the boot camp? # 39; I thought they would back down, but they demeaned me and wanted more, and the two kickers were the first to jump in and say: "Let's go." So it was good.
"They called my bluff, but they run when we get back [to training camp]. "
Fry and Pineiro bounced back after a slow start to minicamp.
On Tuesday, the Bears missed all three kicks at the end of the practice in front of the entire team and about 25 former players who were present to attend the practice. The next day, the Bears eliminated kicker Chris Blewitt, limiting the field to two kickers.
Nagy said on Wednesday that the club would leave all options open this summer, as research to replace veteran kicker Cody Parkey continues.
Chicago knocked out Parkey after getting lost in eight shootouts last year, including a 43-yard pass at the end of the Bears draw against the Philadelphia Eagles. Parkey's decision to appear in a national television morning show a few days after the fatal accident sped up his release.
