Bears sign Artavis Pierce to practice squad, drop two players

The Chicago Bears scored a huge victory over the Detroit Lions last Sunday, but suffered a few injuries to their bodies from the running backs during the game. Reports say starter David Montgomery was out for about a month with a sprained left knee and substitute Damien Williams came out with a quad injury. Williams is expected to be good on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, but the Bears have stepped up to strengthen the position by re-signing Artavis Pierce to their practice squad.

Pierce was with the Bears all offseason and was on their initial practice squad this year, but was released last month. He now joins his former college teammate Ryan Nall as the only two running backs on their practice squad. To make room for Pierce the Bears’ renunciation inside linebacker Rashad Smith.

With Montgomery out and a likely candidate for the injured reserve, expect Nall or Pierce to be part of the game day roster on Sunday.

The Bears’ only other running back is Tarik Cohen, but the earliest he could be activated from the PUP roster is week seven.

Today, the Bears also gave up wide returner / punter Nsimba Webster to make room for wide receiver / return specialist Jakeem Grant, whom they traded for this morning. Grant is an accomplished returner with 5 career TDs, so he will immediately take on the punt return role for the Bears in place of Webster, but also in place of rookie Khalil Herbert on kick returns. Herbert will likely see his attacking role increase next month with Montgomery sidelined.

The Bears also announced they are protecting 4 players from their practice squad this week in Nall and Pierce, as well as defensive lineman Margus Hunt and kicker Brian Johnson.
