Last week I wrote about six things I would look for in the Chicago Bears vs Buffalo Bills preseason contest, so today I wanted to come back to revisit these things to see if I see what. I wanted to see.
Here are bullet points for those six things …
- Andy Dalton and the offense number 1
- Cody Whitehair, Sam Mustipher and James Daniels
- Justin Fields built last week
- Larry Borom’s feet
- Cornerback / nickelback
- Mitch trubisky
Since the Bears got their butt kicked, my re-watching the game was even less exciting than watching it live, but I still persevered to analyze the practice game. This is what I saw.
1) At one point in the first half, play-by-play announcer Adam Amin commented on how bad the Bears offense was, just as it was at the start of their first game against the Dolphins, and that ‘he expected her to pick up again later in the contest, just like he did at the Miami game. Dalton and the first O string tripped a bit, then Dalton was missing several more entries. It’s still hard to understand how effective Dalton can be in attacking Matt Nagy with so many players absent.
2) James Daniels was back in training, but the Bears kept him out of the Bills game. Whitehair was solid and Mustipher was decent, but I want to see the trio work together.
3) At first glance, I wasn’t thrilled with Fields’ second preseason game, but re-watching her made me feel better. You can check out Robert Schmitz’s breakdown of his playing here, as my feelings on Justin’s playing are the same as Robert’s.
4) I wrote down every shot of Borom’s day on the left tackle [+30/-7 (81.1%)] and I thought the rookie showed some promise. He’s still got a ways to go, but the potential is there and I think he’s got the feet to play tackle in the NFL.
5) I don’t think the Bears are comfortable naming a CB2 or nickel starter just yet. Desmond Trufant hasn’t played in any of the preseason games, and Kindle Vildor, Duke Shelley, Artie Burns, Marqui Christian, or anyone else for that matter, haven’t put their mark on any of the positions. Vildor (CB2) and Shelley (NB) seem to be the favorites, but I want to see someone flash.
6) Considering he won’t be playing this season unless there was an injury to Josh Allen, this game was Mitch’s Super Bowl. He and the Bills offense put him on the D of the Bears, and they took advantage of everything Chicago gave them. I really thought Sean Desai’s defense would try to force Trubisky to do the things he struggled for, but I guess in the preseason they didn’t care about the game plan at all.
