Beats Studio Buds vs. AirPods Pro

Apple in June unveiled the new Beats Studio Buds, $ 149 noise-canceling earbuds without a rod and smaller than the AirPods and AirPods Pro. There are some key differences between the ‌AirPods Pro‌ and the Beats Studio Buds that make them unique for different use cases, so we thought we’d compare them in our last YouTube video.

Design-wise, the Beats Studio Buds are smaller and more compact than the ‌AirPods Pro‌, but the design is similar as they offer silicone tips. The Beats Studio Buds actually have a rumored rodless design for the next-gen ‌AirPods Pro‌, so in the future the two sets of headphones could be even more similar when it comes to overall appearance.

Like the ‌AirPods Pro‌, the Beats Studio Buds have active noise cancellation with a Transparency mode. The fit always varies from person to person, but we found the ‌AirPods Pro‌ to be more comfortable with a tighter fit and better waterproofness. That said, the noise cancellation was pretty much the same on the Beats Studio Buds and the ‌AirPods Pro‌. There is also very little difference in the sound quality.

Both come with a charging case that works the same, but the Beats Studio Buds case is more oval and slightly larger. As with the AirPods Pro‌ case, the Studio Buds case provides extra battery life and you can get anywhere from 15-24 hours depending on how often the ANC is used.

There is one major difference between the Beats Studio Buds and the ‌AirPods Pro‌ and explains the price difference – there is no H1 chip. The ‌AirPods Pro‌ have an H1 chip which enables useful features such as switching between devices.

The H1 chip is responsible for much of the “magic” that makes AirPods‌ and ‌AirPods Pro‌ only work with Apple devices and were also included in previous Beats headphones, but with the Beats Studio Buds Apple wanted a more platform independent experience.

Apple designed the Beats Studio Buds to appeal to iPhone and Android users, rather than just targeting iPhone‌ users like with ‌AirPods Pro‌. Apple has always built in quick pairing and Hey Siri activation, so Beats Studio Buds users don’t miss out on too many features. It should be noted, however, that the Beats Studio Buds also lack Spatial Audio support and ear detection.

Apple has succeeded with its multiplatform approach. The Beats Studio Buds work well for iPhone users and for Android users, headphones are the closest thing to an AirPod-like experience on an Android device. At $ 149, they’re cheaper than ‌AirPods Pro‌, and with their feature set, the Beats Studio Buds are well worth the cost.
