After receiving a blood transfusion that saved my life, I could not stop freaking out – I was living a healthy vegan lifestyle, so what was wrong with me? ?

I decided to become a vegetarian in 2014 after watching a documentary on how animals were treated.

I did not eat a lot of red meat, even though I liked chicken and fish, but from that moment, I promised myself to eat vegetables and garnish my kitchen with salads, legumes, legumes and cheese.

I felt brilliant after that, with a lot of energy. But I always thought I was still eating dairy products, so in August 2017, I became vegan.

I knew it would be difficult because I loved cheese and chocolate, but I was determined. I gave up the butter and went to soymilk, while the rest of the family, except my daughter Elizabeth, then 12, was stuck in meat and dairy products .

I started to feel even better. My skin shone, my eyes shone and I was 10 years younger.

I've also lost more than 4th, going from 15 to 7 pounds and a size 22 to 14 in six months. My asthma has improved so much that I no longer need to use my inhalers.

But in the next six months, I began to feel tired and my hair started to thin. A blood test conducted in February 2018 revealed that I was severely anemic.

The iron supplements make me constipated, so my doctor advised me to eat iron-rich foods and I started eating green leafy vegetables every day.

But after 48 hours, the pain accompanied by bloody diarrhea doubled. I rushed to A & E, where they said I had symptoms of bowel cancer or ovarian, and even sent me for a scan – but nothing did not show up.

My consultant suggested keeping a food diary to see if something was triggering it.

I did not tell my family because I did not want to worry them.

The pain persisted, however, and I could not leave the house because I needed a toilet every half hour. Over the months, my hair became dull, my skin became pale yellow and I was out of breath.

Not wanting to disturb my GP, I thought I needed more vitamins; So I piled up my plate with green vegetables and chickpeas, sprinkled with soy milk tea.

But I was still going so much to the bathroom that it was an agony to sit down. I felt dizzy when I got up and my heart raced.

I did not tell my family because I did not want to worry, but after losing consciousness in a store in May of this year, I dragged myself to the GP for further blood tests .

At that time, I had eliminated so many foods from my diet that I lived on mashed potatoes and soy milk tea. Two days later, the doctor called me to tell me to go to the hospital urgently.

I was so anemic, my organs were not getting enough blood and they were at risk of stopping. It was at the hospital that I received the life-saving blood transfusions and iron transfusion.

I mentioned my food diary, but the doctors were too busy monitoring my vital signs to pay attention.

I was given tests, including colonoscopy, CT scan, intestinal biopsies and stool analysis, which showed that my intestines were severely inflamed.

A week later, a doctor reviewed my food diary and suspected that I was allergic to soy, which is present in many vegan foods.

After eliminating it and reintroducing it into my diet, we realized that I was severely intolerant and that it blew my intestines, which caused the formation of clots and stomach upset. I had probably always been allergic, but I had not really eaten before becoming vegan and soy was the main part of my diet.

My body could not cope – I was not getting enough iron, and the two problems combined to make me so anemic, I was admitted to the hospital on the verge of organ failure.

A doctor told me to start eating meat immediately. The idea was revolting, but my family begged me and I knew it was the only way to improve myself.

So in May, I sat at the dining table with a steak in front of me and cried while eating it. I've eaten steak most days since and doctors have figured out that I'm intolerant to red beans, chick peas and green beans – the main foods I eat as vegans.

I recover slowly. I am not so tired and have stopped feeling weak that the iron I draw from meat is more easily absorbed than vegetables. I do not want to eat meat, but I have no choice, and I have to be close to my family. "
