Workers at six of Amazon’s facilities in Germany plan to go on strike from Sunday.
What Happened: Amazon.com, Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) Union Verdi said its employees at six Amazon sites in Germany would go on strike for four days starting Sunday night. Verdi aims to push Amazon to recognize collective agreements, Reuters reports.
According to Verdi, the strike would take place at Amazon sites in Rheinberg, Werne, Koblenz, Leipzig and two locations in Bad Hersfeld. Verdi is considering wage talks with Amazon and is calling for a 4.5% pay rise for his workers.
Why is this important: Germany is Amazon’s largest market after the United States. Amazon has seen a fierce battle with German unions over wages and conditions for logistics workers.
Verdi has been organizing strikes at Amazon in Germany since 2013. In November 2020, Amazon workers began a three-day strike for better pay, working conditions and COVID-19 protections.
Amazon says a collective agreement is not necessary because, according to the company, it already offers sufficient benefits and compensation, as well as a safe working environment.
